Non-paid maternity leave

Hoped to be in a better situation by now but we  are constantly having to dip into savings for things to have the furnace repaired, car troubles and medical bills. I plan on going back to work as quickly as possible after LO is born but in the meantime is is acceptable apply for food benefits while on maternity leave? I've never applied before and don't really know how it works.
