Mucus plug or discharge?

How can you tell the difference between mucus plug and regular discharge? I went to the bathroom and when I wiped a whitish glob of discharge about the size of a nickel what on the toilet paper. Just wondering how do I tell the difference?

Mucous plug is normally resembling snot to look at sorry but only way i can describe it. Also may have blood streaked and really thick. Normol discharge is usually clear/white and not as thick.
