Would you continue the family name?

Help! Even though we haven't conceived yet, I struggle with what to do! My husband is Robert IV. With it being our first child I kind of what the excitement to chose our own name, you know? I also don't like any of the nicknames of Robert or they have already been used in the family. His family really doesn't care if we continue it or not. But on the other hand, I would feel bad for not continuing it. What would you do?

Baby will carry the last name on so I don't see the big deal of keeping Robert. My dad is Robert love him so but doubt I'll name my son that. And your first cud b a girl. So I wouldn't worry bout it quite yet

My husband is Lawrence III . I've tried to convince him that we should not go for Lawrence IV because of all the trouble we've had with his name versus his father's name (banks messing up paperwork, phone networks, mail, tickets that come via mail, etc). A lot of places drop the suffix and look at the main name, which is what has caused all the problems. I think it's a great idea for us to be able to do this on our own and not have someone six decades ago be the one that originally named my child. I want that bond with my husband.

My husband is a Robert and there are a ton of Robert's in his family. He really wants to name our first son Robert, too. While I don't really love it, it's soooo important to him and to his family, I can't imagine saying no. I would rather compromise on a name than drive that big of a wedge into our relationship.

If you're planning on having more than one child (and who knows which genders you will have) you don't have to name your first born son Robert V, it could be your second son (or 3rd or 4th. No one ever said it has to be the first one! And who knows, maybe you won't even have boys.
