ADD/ADHD and worried about starting a family.
So, I realize that this isn't a typical question that gets asked here, but thus far I've been unsuccessful at finding any reassuring advice on the web. As a result, I'm hoping there are other ADD/ADHD teachers on here who can help.
I find myself looking to the future more and more as my boyfriend and I inch closer to tying the knot and starting our own family. While this should be (and for the most part is) a happy prospect, it's soured by the thought of facing a school year (or longer if I breastfeed the full 6 months) without my meds. It is so terrifying to me that at times it has sent me spiraling into anxiety attacks, convinced that I would end up losing my job and potentially the baby due to the stress and anxiety. If I had a milder case of ADD/ADHD, it wouldn't be as concerning; but I'm a large-group teacher (35-48 elementary kids per class, no para) who already deals with anxiety issues, and I've recently had to up my meds to 30mg of Adderall XR just to stay on top of things....I'm sure you can see why the idea of going cold turkey is more than a bit daunting.
I love my job, and I know that the admin team would work with me to an extent; but I also know how I am off my meds, and I'm going to end up drowning. Additionally, as I currently have the higher of the two incomes, taking time off from working to have kids isn't a viable option unless my partner gets a significantly better paying job. As it stands, my current plan is to taking the time to learn additional coping skills, and to start using the breaks to create a year-long binder of step-by-step lessons that I can pull from during the pregnancy.
Aside from those ideas is there anything else that y'all could recommend? Have you or someone you've worked with dealt with this issue? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you, and much love!
