Would you schedule childcare in your home on holidays your family celebrates?

I am a pediatric in home nurse for several cases. We recently got our schedule going thru the holidays. Every family, except 1, has omitted in home visits. Its the 1 child that literraly does not need the care the others do. This family abuses the system and it frustrates me badly. They celebrate all holidays and now I will be stuck on their couch while they cook, open gifts, and socialize. I'm curious how this group of diverse women feel. Comments welcome, nasty attitudes not so much.

I see a lot of people saying "if the doctor's feel the child needs care, then the child needs care", but as a nurse myself I know that's not always true. I work in a private practice & we have patients come in all the time demanding home health services simply because their insurance allows it & their dx codes are the ones that need to be checked to auto-approve the services. So, I understand your frustration. I would speak to your supervisor about possibly limiting your time there during the holidays, or to even re-evaluate this families need for home health care. Obviously you should stick around if it becomes apparent that they truly do need your help on the holidays, but you should have the option to assess the situation & act accordingly. Good luck with all the medical legal red tape involved.😖

I mean it's the job you choose, people work holidays it's not that uncommon. If you don't like the job than quit but don't try and blame the family. I know plenty of families with children that require in home nurses and they have someone pretty much everyday of the year, including holidays. The nurses realize that it's part of what they signed up for and plan their schedules around it, just like the rest of us that have jobs and work holidays. Some families may be more confident in the care of their child while others may like the security of having a medical professional there, no need to shame them.

No ma'am. So you do private duty cases? How long is the shift? I'm a nurse too and I left acute care a couple years ago and went into doing home health visits strictly because I didn't want to continue working weekends/holidays. Seriously, if the kid doesn't have any skilled needs for you to handle then I would talk to the family about it. Tell them you're a nurse, not a nanny.

Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve/ Christmas is literally the only time all my family gets together. I always request it off. I come from a family of 10, so it's hard to all be at the same place at once.

I think it's kind of insensitive of you to post this. Obviously their medical team feels that they need in home services. If it amount to respite care on holidays so they can take a break and enjoy themselves with one less thing to stress about you should do it graciously or pick another job.
