Concerns over pregnancy on IUDs.
It seems like a lot of you are curious about whether or not pregnancy can occur on an IUD. Don't immediately fret if you experience pregnancy symptoms but have no positive pregnancy test results. PMS can cause similar symptoms often.
No birth control is 100% effective except for abstinence. IUD's are most effective when placed correctly, as are condoms when used correctly - which means correct lubricant and accurate placement.
However with a Mirena or other hormonal IUD - if it is not placed properly or becomes dislodged, you will most likely feel pain. Seek medical attention as soon as possible. This can lead to serious uterine problems and distress.
As with any hormonal birth control, if you are on any medication, particularly pharmaceuticals, consult a doctor when paired. I experienced a chemical pregnancy which is a very early miscarriage earlier this year due to the hormones essentially being ineffective in combination with my antiepileptics medication. The hormonal IUD could then allow pregnancy but likely make pregnancy unviable, however you could still possibly carry a child. Seek medical counsel for testing, especially if you've had a postive pregnancy result.
If you have a Paraguard or copper IUD and think you may be pregnant, have a positive pregnancy test, seek medical counsel and testing. It is possible though unlikely. Again - no birth control is 100% effective.
Best ways to avoid pregnancy and generally have safe sex in combination with the IUD? Use a condom, practice the pull out method, avoid sex on your fertile days, stay informed on the effects medication can have on hormonal birth control.
Practice safe sex guys! ❤
