FTM help

Casey
My baby girl is 2 days old and we have been learning to breastfeed together. The only problem is, the first day she never really got the hang of it and I didn't have anyone to help really so my nipples are very chapped and painful. Now that she is latching (which I assume is correctly per the nurse) it is toe curling painful. I literally just want to cry anytime I think about having to feed her. Please tell me how to make this better! I have numbed them with ice before feeding, but that's really not working. Please help and/or encourage.

Ok pain is not normal. go back and see a midwife or see a lactation consultant. until then, go on youtube and see 'the flipple technique' for a better latch. Don't give up sweetie

From my personal experience this is normal. Your baby is only two days old & your nipples will have to get used to being suckled. Even with the correct latch your nipples will hurt at this early stage unfortunately though it shouldn't be unbearable pain. If the pain is unbearable then you may not have the correct latch. You should put some coconut oil or nipple cream to soothe the pain & it shouldn't last more than the fist few wks.

Completely normal!! I would literally be in tears crying every time I fed my daughter. Try nipple cream and a nipple shield after a few weeks the pain should go away. Sounds horrible but you gotta let them callous over and toughen up. You got this momma!! Breast feeding is very hard who ever told you it was easy/natural instincts is a lying bitch. But once you get past those first few weeks it is the easiest most natural thing you will do! And if you are unable to continue your breastfeeding journey that is 100% OKAY!! "Fed is best" do NOT let any one make you feel guilty for choosing formula for your baby!!

A little update from my meltdown last night: my nipples are not cracked or bleeding. After she eats, the nipple looks like it should and doesn't look like lipstick or flat or anything else. I got her to latch last night and it was initially tender, but definitely bearable after she fed for a few minutes. I am going to contact a lactation consultant anyway just to make sure we are on the right path. I really don't want to go to formula so I have to get my mind right! lol being a momma is hard...but she is so worth it!!

I only needed that one pumping session to confirm we were on the right track oh and some lanolin cream - that stuff works wonders for sure nipples!! Hang in there mama

For me it was painful when my milk was first coming in (2-4 days pp). I had a little melt down on the third night and the midwife suggested having a break and pumping for 12 hours. As soon as I got on the pump the pain was the same and I realised it was the let down that hurt not the latch.
