finances and budgeting!

Ok so my boyfriend and I had been together for 7 years. We now have a 9 month old daughter and we really need to figure out some kind of budget to help us save! We literally live paycheck to paycheck and I'm not amazing with numbers, but I'm pretty good with my money..he's not really though.
Anyone have tips on how we can figure this out?! We had to stop renting our 2 bedroom apartment and rent a single room from my grandma until we can figure out our finances and we are going crazy living with her!

So, I know this might sound harsh, but I had to entirely take over money. My husband surrendered his debit card because he struggles with impulse spending. I give him a weekly allowance in cash, but when it's gone, it's gone. I also budget everything, I stay within a very specific amount for groceries, and if we are going to have a short check (like our checks that rent comes out of), I budget a little extra out of the fatter one so that we aren't short. We've had some medical bills that wiped out our savings, but we are usually really good at keeping at least $1000+ in savings.

It gets tough saving and managing money correctly when you have a child- especially with all the work you put into raising one and having a job, every one is gonna wanna spend money to treat themselves too and to stay happy. The key to managing money and saving is to keep track of everything you spend. Then assess where your money goes to-- food, baby stuff, gas, rent, bills, etc. When you understand where most of your money goes then you create a budget for each category of your spending habits. Try to be very minimal, cooking at home is best. Go on Google and look up budget plans people have pre made to live simply. There are also phone apps you can buy that will help you manage accounts and help you set monthly or weekly budgets and give you budget reports on your spending habits. I use the Mint app for Iphone. Its really cool- Ive linked my bank accounts to it and it gives me charts on my spending weekly and monthly. It alerts me when im getting close to my budget for each category. After youve set budgets, set an amount you will put away each month or week for a savings account. The best thing you can do to achieve a goal is to get in the right mindset! Change your mindset and always think about your future goal so that if youre tempted to spend extra money on something you dont need, remind yourself why you have a budget and where you want to be in the future. Best of luck in everything!!! Health&Happiness to you and your family :)
