Karo syrup & water ok for baby constipation relief?

The pharmacist recommended a little karo syrup in water to help my 6 month old son poop. This seemed odd to me. Is this safe? And if it is, has it worked for anyone? We have tried literally everything else and nothing will do the trick.

My doctor prescribed lactulose which is over the counter and that's worked great
