breastfeeding and nipple shields ?! help

My baby will only nurse with a nipple shield! I began using one because I learned I have flat nipples and they weren't allowing me to feed my baby properly and she lost 10 ounces ( the nipple shield helped to pull my nipples out and allow my baby to feed)... ever since i started using it, she nursed good ! But the doctor told me they are only for temporary use and to start taking her off of it by letting her nurse with it on for 1-2 min then taking it off and letting her feed from my breast. I tried this and she just won't latch on and it frustrates her so much that I end up just putting it back on.. my question is, is it okay to use The nipple shield for an extended time period? I just recently stated pumping but haven't fed my baby with a bottle yet... I really want to keep breast feeding but I feel like if I can't use the nipple shield then it'll just end up frustrating us both and I'll give up and only feed her thru bottles from pumping.

It's fine hun. I used a nipple shield until my daughter was 5 and a half months, i have flat small nipples too.  When your baby gets older and has a stronger latch you can start trying to wean them off the shield, but using it for longer than your doctor says won't  hurt anything. My daughter is 8 months now and still breastfeeding like a champ shield free! You'll know when your baby is ready to go without it. Good job for sticking it out and breastfeeding with the shield! Anyone that's used one knows what a pain in the ass it can be! Good luck mama!

I used a nipple shield with my daughter for 5 months! Until she started latching good. No worries I would just let her nurse with the shield. The more they nurse the more your nipples will stretch out and then they will nurse with out the shield

With my first I used it for 4 mos., I also used it with my second and third and used it a couple months with each. I wouldn't worry so much. Feed your baby.

Yeah, you really don't want to be using a shield long term. They can make if difficult for babe to properly empty the breast, leading to clogged ducts and eventually even mastitis, as well as low supply. Your best bet is probably to contact a local LC and work with her to wean off of the shield.

You can use it long term. I asked the LC this about a week after my LO was born. I am 3 months in and haven't had any issues. She's latched a few times without it, but I guess I just find it easier with it. I have a couple on hand and always keep one in the diaper bag!

I've used the shield for almost 3 months now. Only got clogged duct once. Just make sure to empty your breast and massage them frequently to avoid it. I love my shields even though I ALWAYS loose them.
