communication

Hey guys, so my boyfriend and I have been together for a year and a half now and have been long distance for most of it. We are both at college and are both very busy. However, whenever I want to talk to him or have time, he doesn't answer usually. I get texts from him checking in throughout the day. He hates his phone and is bad at texting with everyone, any suggestions on how to help his communication in our relationship?
