Baby shower AFTER baby?

Question

My husband's sweet aunt wants to throw us a shower in another state about two weeks before my due date. Being a FTM, I am a little wary of being in another state with a 2.5 hour drive from my hospital so close to my due date. My MIL suggested we just change it until after my baby is born. I have never attended a shower like this, so I am wondering, is this strange to do? Have any of you done this or plan to do this?

I have gone to plenty of after baby arrives baby shower. I honestly think it's a wonderful idea! You get more of what you need and you don't have to live in fear of everyone's scary birthing stories they all share at  the showers because yours is done. And having the baby therr is so much fun for everyone to meet!

It's very common in Asian cultures (at least in Chinese & Korean). In Chinese, we actually hold a baby banquet for everyone once the baby turns 100 days-old. The new parents host (usually you rent out a restaurant), you invite everyone (and their friends 🙄) and all the adults get drunk toasting the new child. The mom sits down holding the baby and people come up to congratulate her (but they don't hold the child as drunk & it's seen as intruding upon the bonding between mother-baby). You do get super useful gifts as it's always serious money to be put into baby's educational fund, or if it's a girl, she'll also get 24K gold jewelry. My siblings and I were all born in Canada, and we all had baby banquets when we each turned 100 days-old. In Korea, it's when the child turns a year old. We plan to do the same but nothing crazy like a dinner banquet - I was thinking more of renting a nice garden terrace and hosting a cocktail/tea party.

My own mother and MIL are currently debating this. My mother-in-law wants to have the shower right away but I am not due till February. We have Christmas coming up and some other family functions so I don't even think we could fit the shower in. My mom really wants to have the shower after the baby is born. It's a tradition in my family and it's also a welcoming party for the baby as well. I agree with the comments about having the shower at least a month after the baby is born. I've been told by several people that it takes about 6 weeks post partum for you to begin to feel normal again so you don't want to over do it.

Do whatever you like! Apparently I came 3 weeks early so I was present at my own baby shower that turned into a welcome party!

Me! Our baby was due 17 February but arrived 14 weeks early on 12 November.
So I'm going to have a pretty-homecoming baby shower in late January instead.

We did this for our son bc the winter season wasn't safe to drive in. By first born was born In March and we had it in April.

Not strange. But, make sure it's well after you have healed and had time to rest and establish being a mommy. I would guess around 8 weeks would be a good time to do it since 6 weeks recovery is recommended by doctors for a normal vaginal delivery.

I would just make sure to do it more than a month after the baby is born because that's the recommended time to keep baby away from lots of germy people. And even then make sure the baby is comfortable in the car for that long as some doctors don't recommend a baby being in a position like that for very long.
