"Opinions can't be wrong"

Whitney

That is a sentence I have heard time and time again. It is a statement that is actually true in the appropriate circumstance. For example, if someone asks you if the new movie that just came out in theatres is any good, that would be an opinionated circumstance. There is no right or wrong answer to that question.

Now, what I have noticed a lot lately is the word "opinion" being misused in circumstances that are not opinionated. People are using the word to justify invalidating experiences and silencing groups of people so they don't have to hear their issues. People's realities, experiences, and issues are not opinionated circumstances.

When someone is telling you how something affects them, they are not giving you an opinion. They are telling you their reality. Opinions are only valid in subjective circumstances. Realities are not subjective.

I just thought I would throw that little tidbit of information out there so we all understand the difference. Discuss if you must.
