Boyfriend made me cry on my Birthday

It was my birthday on Saturday, and it was my first one away from my family. Usually my birthday isn't a big deal for me but since I had nobody in my new town I really wanted my boyfriend to do something special for me. He's never been romantic or sweet so I thought my birthday might be different. We've been together for three years and he knows that I love surprises and gifts. However, I spent the whole day alone on the couch all day while he woke at at 6 pm! And then went straight to the gym. I'm hurt that he didn't even think about me on my special day. We've been fighting a lot since we moved in together about 6 months ago, and he's so selfish. I'm getting tired of being left behind. I've thought about getting my own place after our lease is up but I'm scared he will definitely leave me if I do. He's from China and I'm sure he would go back home and I'd never see him again :(
