painful sex gets me frustrated!!

I've been on a distance relationship for over an year, when he came to visit me and we had sex I felt a terrible pain! I almost cried cause I've never felt that before in my life. I went to the doctor and she diagnosed me with hpv but said it's not related to the pain I felt. Before seeing him I stayed 1 year without having sex and idk if that could be the reason, but I don't believe it is because we tried several times and I kinda got used to the pain after a while but everytime we tried again the pain was terrible in the beginning. And btw I've been feeling like the inside of my vagina suddenly gets super swollen randomly (like little hard balls), that was before and after he came to visit me. Please I need help!
