Confused? Please help!!

Question

I took a test 10 days ago and got a positive but a few days after that I got a light "period" for four days(my periods normally last 7 days always) .. What is going on?

I would test again, if your lines are still nice and dark, it's possible everything is ok with the pregnancy, especially if the bleeding was light and wasn't accompanied with any clots or painful cramping. The type of bleeding you may have experienced is often called break through or decidual bleeding, which usually has no negative impact on the pregnancy itself. I had break through bleeding the first month of pregnancy with my youngest and feared the worst until ultrasound confirmed my son was still alive and healthy. Doc explained that most of these types of bleeds aren't as uncommon as you'd think, and are due to your body not recognizing the hormones of pregnancy right away, so a small portion of the uterine lining is shed before pregnancy hormones take over and stop menstruation completely. He explained it much better than I can, and it was almost 6 years ago when this happened to me, so I can't remember the conversation completely. Anyway, just to put your mind at ease though, I'd definitely retest, and also phone your doc to explain the bleed... He or she may want to schedule you an appointment sooner rather than later. There are many reasons one may experience light spotting early on in pregnancy, and not all of these causes are necessarily bad signs. Could be a decidual bleed, or even due to a sensitive cervix. If bleeding was heavy and/or bright red, and accompanied with pain on one side and/or shoulder pain though, this could be a sign of an ectopic pregnancy, so the best thing to do at this point is to get in to see your doc right away to rule out anything more serious going on. Like I said, I had a period-type bleed with my son, and he's a happy, healthy 5 yr old now!
