Custom Carseat Covers or No?

Question

I have a 10 month old little boy and I plan on getting him a bigger car seat soon. So I was thinking about just using his infant car seat and just getting a cover made for it for a little girl. But I've heard about safety issues and I was also wondering about how hot and sweaty the baby would get with that material during the summer. 
So I'm really looking for people's experiences and opinions on them, please help me out!

Absolutely not safe unless the maker of the car seat has replacement covers. Chicco has replacement covers on their site in all different colors.

A drape cover that attaches to the arm bar is totally fine and safe for them. I personally never used one and I just draped blankets. It is the frilly upholstery redo that can make the seat less safe for the baby. My husband and I want 3 kids ( we have a 14 month old boy and I'm five weeks pregnant with our second) so all the baby gear I got during my first pregnancy was unisex because we plan on reusing it.

Many companies see replacement covers for their seats. That would be your safest bet.

I have a canopy from carseatcanopy.com and i love it. Especially now with the winter to keep the wind out or just to keep germs put since im absolutely paranoid. The way its made it doesn't get in her face at all really and I'm constantly checking on her

They are adorable but very unsafe. Just get you a cute car seat canopy that goes over it and can be removed.

A cover on top is fine. If it's an actual seat cover then no. My son has a cozy cover thing for winter and he loves it.

No. they are not safe. If it didn't come with the car seat than it's not safe.

A cover for over the top (to keep sun out) sure- a cover that goes between the baby and the seat is a huge no. They're not accounted for in crash tests. Some seats have ones that do go with them and that's fine, but you don't want to mix and match or use a 3rd party one or a home made one.
