When did you transition your kid to a big bed?

Like from their crib to a twin or full size?

We never has a toddler bed, both daughters went from crib to twin beds with the side rails. They were both around 2 tho.

Doesn't the transition typically go crib to toddler then to twin or full? Ftm and I thought I had an idea

I'm just curious because I know a lot of people do this, but why did you transition from the crib to the toddler bed and then the big bed? The toddler bed is the same size mattress as the crib right? 
Our crib converts to a toddler bed but you do this just by taking the side rail off and replacing it with a small railing. I'm not sure I see the point in doing this and not just switching them to a big bed so they have more room. Is it just a they get used to sleeping without the big rail there?
