Am I doing the right thing??

Question

I'm babysitting two boys, 5 and 2 (there are two more but they are with their relatives) and I put them to bed and the 5 year old has been screaming because I won't let him watch his kindle, even though its Christmas break, in bed because I wasn't told if this was ok or not with his parents.
He's been fine the past few months I've been watching them and has gone to bed no problem when I say bedtime and this is the first time he's been acting up.
I know they were watching a movie and it's their parents a few days ago and it frightened him (the new Tim Burton movie) and said his mom sometimes lets him watch the kindle in bed but I wasn't told by his parents if this was ok so I don't want to make that decision and he's the fibber of the group, plus he said they didn't let him sleep with it yesterday; but if they say they were and I took his right away, I'm going to feel bad :/.
There's no way of me calling to ask either because they are seeing a movie.
I don't want to just give him what he wants but I'm going to feel bad if he really was allowed and I basically took it away.

You're doing the right thing. It's better to take it away than to let him think he can tell you anything and you'd do it. I used to babysit a 4 year old and he would try the same stuff and if his mom wasn't clear about something I'd either ask one of his brother which were like 12 or imagine what I'd do if I was the parent but I also knew his mom pretty well. But in my honest opinion stand your ground you don't want him to think he can manipulate the situation. I'm not even saying he'd do it on purpose but kids like to try to pull a fast one on babysitters and substitute teachers. And if you happened to take something away then when the parents get home explain why you did it and they should be thankful a lot of parent don't like their kids on electronics all night. And just ask for them to clear it all up so you know for future reference. And it's also not like you're punishing him you're just trying to do the right thing.

Your doing the right thing if it wasn't told to to me then I wouldn't do it... My daughters kindle has a curfew set on it so even when she is with others and says I let her it automatically restricts her at 8... also try a story or letting him keep the light on or stay with him till he dozes off
