Guy backs out of everything.

Need an explanation. Coworker takes me on awesome dates, tells me he can't do a relationship. Then we plan to be friends with benefits and as soon as that starts he backs out and says he's "complicated." We've kept a friendship, I just always wonder what it means when guys say they're complicated. He's older and doesn't open up about relationships or his past often.
