It depends on the circumstances. If it hurts, y'all probably aren't doing it right. Just relax, and use lube. Either do it in missionary or you on top. That's the easiest way. Also, a little protip, because I naturally just have a small vagina apparently, and putting anything in it hurts. For your first few times, have him put his fingers in your first. One, then two, maybe three. Do this for a few minutes. Then, try sticking it in. If it doesn't work, he didn't fit my first few times, do it again and repeat the entire process.

Putting in tampons may hurt because your flow isn't heavy enough. Try using a lighter tampon or wait until the second or third day of your period where it's a little heavier. For sex, it usually hurts most women the first time and for others it's just a very new feeling. It didn't hurt me my first time, it was just a new type of pressure.
