My natural birth went like this...
I knew I wanted to labor at home as long as possible... I got one of those contraction apps to Time them throughout the day. I actually timed my contractions for a full 72 hours. I really thought it was time to go after timing for a whole day and being up all night, but after I got off the phone with the hospital the contractions spread back apart. Luckily, I had a doctors appointment that morning, I was 3cm dilated and 100% effaced. Doctor went ahead and stripped the membranes (holy shit did that hurt)!! After that, I really started to feel the contractions.
I lasted for about 9 hours until we decided to go to the hospital. Upon being admitted, I was at 6cm dilated and it took 12 hours until she was finally born. The nurse kept checking in on me and offering the epidural... kinda pushy with it, actually. But I kept putting it off and telling myself I can deal without it. I did take the dilaudid (it just took the edge off slightly and only lasted 2 hours with each dose) and it was awesome because I was able to finally get some sleep while contracting. Thank God, because I was so exhausted and running on six hours of sleep in 48hours.
Once the pain of the contractions hit the point that I wanted the epidural it was by far too late, and it wouldn't have helped me anyway. The Dilaudid had completely worn off by the time my doctor showed up. He came in and broke my water at about 5am, I pushed for nearly two hours, and had her at 713am. She was stuck in the birth canal so I had a very hard time pushing... at one point I just wanted to give up. I was crying that I couldn't do it anymore.
I must have gotten strength from somewhere and just started pushing through each contraction. I had to just block everything out in the room and just focus on my contractions and pushing through them. Looking back, I wouldn't do it any differently. If it had not been for the dilaudid, I probably would've taken the epidural (which I really didn't want to do). I tore a little bit and had one stitch. I had to have a catheter and that was honestly the worst part when it came to healing. I will avoid that part next time!! Here we are two months later and I can't wait til the next baby! I miss being pregnant! 😂
