I've been trying now for about 6/7 months. I was on BC(the pill) for years.. is it common to take a while?

Answer

It can take a normal healthy couple up to one year to conceive. Being on the pill beforehand should not have a major effect on you. If you are still having regular cycles and getting positive OPKs or temping to confirm ovulation then keep trying. If it gets to over 1 year with no bfp or cycles are irregular and you do not think you are ovulating you should see your OB/Gyn or a reproductive endocrinologist.

It can take 6 months to a year to conceive as all those hormones work their way out of your system. If it take longer than 1yr you should seek medical advice
