What is a membrane sweep??

Like... what is the procedure?? I'm just curious. My doctor hasn't really mentioned it since I'm still 38 weeks and he's all about waiting (🙄 lol) but I'm just wondering what actually happens??

The idea behind a membrane sweep is to stimulate the production of prostaglandin, which is a hormone that prepares your cervix for labour. Your care provider inserts a finger through your cervix and firmly moves their finger around in a circular motion, separating the membranes of the amniotic sac from your cervix.

A dr inserts one finger into your cervix and with moderate pressure (ie. it needs to hurt) swirls their finger around to stimulate the cervix. It's duration is about 10-12 seconds and you need to be 1cm dilated (so the finger fits). This tricks the body essentially and jumpstarts labour usually. If it is not done with adequate pressure it won't be successful.

Where they separate the amniotic sac from the uterin lining . I had one done yesterday and you can def tell it feels funny walking afterward but so far just inconsistent contractions

It's where they run their finger around your cervix to help loosen the sac I think . My doctor won't do it until I'm 39 weeks
