When and how did you tell your employer?

Question

I'm so scared to tell my manager - I'm at 14 weeks and my annual performance review is in 4 weeks. I don't want the news to give them a subconscious bias against me (as they will have to pay me for months throughout my leave and I will be transitioning off some major projects) 
I'm not sure how these conversations usually go down and if I should give them the benefit of doubt, but I want to get the best raise and promotion I deserve so I can provide for my baby. I've worked really hard this past year and as much as I want to trust my employer, I need to protect my own interests! 
How and when did you tell? How did it go?

Legally you don't have to tell them ;) if your in the US, I would wear a lot of large sweaters for the next few weeks and just say your so cold. After the review say something in passing like oh I thought I told  everyone lol

I told my employer the day I took the test. I had a lot of complications with previous pregnancys that didn't end well so didn't want to risk it.  I just went in and started crying because of the journey we'd been through to get to this point and she just gave me a hug and we did my risk assessment. X

I have only been in my job 3months and im 10weeks pregnant. Im so scared to tell. My 6month probation/review is not till March and i will be 22weeks by then so i dont think i can hold pff that long but im gonna hold off another few weeks

I would wait until after your review. Why risk it?

I told my boss right away because I was so tired and it was affecting my work. They cannot hold it against you or take any adverse action because you're pregnant. I'm lucky that I am an employment attorney so I had no reason to be nervous that they would do that to their own employer. But, if it feels like they are, you should talk to an attorney. Good luck!

I told my boss and some coworkers pretty early. I'm a nurse and my last pregnancy ended in miscarriage so I told people so I wouldn't have to explain why I'm not lifting patients or letting them try to pull on me.

You don't have to tell them until you're ready. Personally I would wait until after the performance review if that's what you're worried about. I intend on telling my boss when I'm out of the first trimester, but where I work everyone has kids except for me and two other people. Good luck with everything. :)

I'm going through a similar situation and have the same question. I'm a head start teacher who just got an extended contract (rather than ending in May I'll end in June; few weeks before my due date). I'm worried because I'm unmarried. Last school year my boss belittled a coworker who was in my exact situation to the point she left. It's very scary!

I haven't told me work yet either, I'm almost 12 weeks. I have been wanting to ask for a well deserved promotion for a while now, so I want to do that before announcing. Good luck to us both!

Wait to tell them until after your review. Then however that goes, you won't worry that your telling them the news affected the outcome. I plan to tell HR at 12 weeks and then the partner that I work with a lot shortly after that since she is doing scheduling now for our summer audits and she needs to know that I'm gonna be out on maternity leave (I'm a CPA). I expect them to be supportive, but I do worry that since I'm one of the few people at my level who are married and the only one pregnant, that my peers may treat me differently. 😕 But oh well, it's amazing news and this is the right timing for us!
