Don't know if I have it or not since I'm still waiting for the test to come back.  I've been with my boyfriend for almost 3 years and he says he has been faithful.  I'm thinking he's full of shit.  From what I've read it can be dormant in your body for years.  How slim is the likelihood that one of us contracted it from a previous partner and my first outbreak is just happening now?

What is making you think he has it? When is the last time either of you were tested?

Although herpes is a sexually transmitted infection and those are generally thought of only being on the genitalia it can also appear on the mouth. If you did your reading you should have read that there are two types and that you can get either one in either place. It's actually really confusing and because, yes, the virus can stay dormant for quite some time you usually can't say when you first got it. He could have shared something like a drink with a friend that had an open herpes sore on their mouth and then passed it to you if he's gone down on you. It's actually very likely. I had a friend who had it dormant in her system for a good 8 years and didn't have an outbreak until after her first child was born. Her doctor told her that it's likely the stress of the labor triggered the outbreak.
