To spank or not to spank? (Discipline)

I overheard a conversation about how this lady's kid wasn't listening the older lady told her to pass a swat on his little butt and he will learn to listen. They lady's comeback was she would never spank her child and just doesn't believe in that. I hear a lot about this generation being disrespectful entitled blah blah blah and how back in the day they picked their switch and got their little hineys busted. They apparently had more respectful less entitled little humans. So My question to you is do you think if parents would spank their children instead of this whole "I don't want to destroy their character" we would have better listening respectful less entitled little humans?
