Holiday Traditions

Jay
So I know the holiday season is over but I was having this convo with a coworker and I was really intrigued by the different traditions that different people and cultures have. My family for example, we don't wash our hair, clothes, mop, or sweep on New Year's eve and New Year's Day, because we believe that's it washes someone out of our family. My coworker does the opposite because she believes that it cleans all the bad energy from the previous year out of your house. What are some of your holiday traditions? (I didn't know if this was the right place to post this or not)

At Christmas we play "hide the pickle" we have a pickle ornament and the person who found it from the previous year hides it somewhere in the house.. Whoever finds it will have good luck for the rest of the year!

We used to spend Christmas eve with my dads family, Christmas Day with my mums family, but my Nan died and dad hates his brother, so we don't do that anymore. We don't really have any traditions, but my mum has 3 sisters. Sister 1 will make sister 2 cry, sister 3 will try and make peace between them, and my mum will take me, my brother and my 16 y.o cousin into the corner of the room and we all sit on our phones.

I live in the south, this is our new years day meal (there's different variations/meanings of each food)-hog jowl so we always have meat/food on our table-turnip/collard greens so we always have green in our wallet-black eyed peas (I make pinto/white beans) so we always have good luckCombined with cornbread, fried potatoes and Mac and cheese it's my favorite meal of the year! We also don't take our Christmas tree down until after the first of the year (it's bad luck if you do)

My husband and I open our presents to each other on Xmas eve at midnight 😃. Its just been a coincidence each year because we are so busy the next day but now it's become tradition 🙂. Every year I buy mums presents from dad, so when we open them me, mum and my sister say to dad stuff like 'oh this is lovely where did you get it from?' Or 'what is this?' Etc and he has no idea 😂. We always laugh at each other 🙂
