Just wanting to share my EBF to now having to pump story after hospital stay

Brandis

I really have been wanting to share this story somewhere either it'll help someone or maybe it'll just get positive responses...

My son was born 11/28/2016. I wanted to exclusively breastfeed so that's what we started to do he lost weight like they usually do and went from a birth weight of 5lbs 12oz to 5lbs 4oz went to a primary appointment wanting me to try supplementing I did in fact try but he wanted nothing to do with it. So I just continued to breastfeed in 24 hrs he'd gained over 2 ounces. Good deal. Continued to breastfeed felt like I was always feeding him. Not just every 2-3 hrs I mean all the time. It seemed like I never had a single moment period. I just figured it was normal.

This past Tuesday went in to do his month check up. He was 6lbs 7oz which was a slight concern and I had pointed out this weird coloration on his skin. Come to find its mottling . Which can be caused from them being cold but Dr could feel he wasn't cold. Plus he was still jaundice. Well we ended up from Dr's orders going directly to the emergency room. It didn't take long for them to tell me he'd be admitted. We found out my son has an issue with milk transfer (met with lactation consultants) and because of that I was having an issue with supply so my poor child was getting no where enough to be content for a couple hrs like he should have been able too. We ended up in the hospital until yesterday so essentially a 4 day stay. I learned how to pump started to pump. As well as needing to supplement formula so he'd actually get the amount that he needed. That alone made him gain an additional 10 ounces during our hospital stay. Now I pump every 2 hrs. We supplement with formula and feed direct from breast in hopes to help my milk supply and get to a point at the very least to be able to take out the formula. I had really wanted to just breastfeed. But at this point I'm glad he's growing and doing much better and at least the majority of his meals he is getting my milk first. I will continue this journey to see if we can get back to direct breast feeding. If anyone actually reads this all I appreciate it I just had to share it's been a long stressful week
