Maternity leave

So I'm due either the March 31st or April 1st, this is also my first pregnancy.. I work pretty hard, I do a assembly job. My question is when should I take maternity leave? Is it up to me, should I wait until it gets hard for me to work to take off? I'm just scared of not making the right decision.. thanks mommas!
