making friends in college

How do you know if your in the right group of friends. Especially when your in college.

I just started college and I've settled with these group of girls that are nice but I find myself pretending to be less of myself. I'm not sure if I should just stick it out or be more out there and try to introduce myself to more new people. I do find meeting new people scary but I'm willing to try to be more out there.
