California rolls ?!

Are they safe to eat ? It's not raw fish its imitation crab meat and I'm craving it like crazy !

I've read that the ingredients in the California rolls aren't bad to eat while pregnant, however the risk is in the cross contamination between other raw foods. For example, if it's made on the same cutting board or surface as other sushi that is raw it could be contaminated. I would stay away from it, but that's just me!

I actually just learned yesterday that it's an FDA regulation that raw fish be frozen before used in sushi, which eliminates all parasites. As long as you don't eat too much ahi tuna (a bit high in mercury) you should be fine. There's always a risk of food poisoning with sushi, whether your pregnant or not, but my doctor said, really, as long as you're not overdoing it and/or eating from a place that's. It very reputable, you should be fine. If we wanted 0% chance of food poisoning, there would be very little we could eat at all!

I went to sushi the other night with husband and kids and ate the crud out of the ones that didn't have raw fish!!! So delicious an I was fine.

It's the rice that is the main concern as it's one of the top foods that can give you listeria. If you make it yourself then it's no issue, but you have no idea how long that rice has been pre-made at a shop.

I've been eating sushi at my favorite place at least once a week. However, with reports of salmon and the worms right now, I'm staying clear of salmon for a few weeks. The chances of listeria are pretty low, all things considered, as long as you're going to a quality, fresh location.

I've eaten the cooked stuff with my other two kids no problem. You'd be more likely to get food poisoning than listeria (US listeria cases 2014 93 out of 3.9 million babies born). Eat from a reputable place and you'll be fine. I always let them know I'm pregnant and ask to be very cautious with cross contaminating.

A lot of California rolls have Masago(fish eggs). These are not safe to eat during pregnancy. It is considered "raw" and also contains mercury. Otherwise, yes! I eat California roll and shrimp rolls without masago all of the time!
