How did you handle cloth diapers and your registry?

Hey ladies, I am 28 weeks with our first baby. I am fully dedicated to cloth diapering him when he arrives- to avoid nasty chemicals but mostly to eliminate the huge reoccurring cost of disposables. I will be a SAHM and I am confident in the hours and hours of research I have done that I will be able to keep up with the laundry routines and find combinations that will make cloth work for us long term. The problem is that none of our families are supportive of this decision- every single person has at the very least said they don't think I will do keep up with it, asked why I want to make having a baby so hard, or straight up told us "he'll be in pampers in a week". Our budget is very tight and we are really hoping that we will receive several of the cloth diapering items we need from our registry at my showers. But with the lack of support, I am worried that no one will want to purchase anything for cloth diapering for us. I am registered at 2 stores and 30%- 50% of each registry is inserts, covers, wet bags, etc. Did anyone else have unsupportive families, and how did that work out at your shower?

It was suggested on another site that I register for the type of disposables I would want to use also, because people will buy disposables even if I say we aren't using them, and that way I won't end up with a bunch of pampers that I just flat out wouldn't put on him even if we didn't use cloth. But I don't want to encourage anyone to buy disposables at all. Help! 
(I am really not trying to come off as ungrateful- I know that people are buying us gifts because they want to not because they have to. This is a surprise baby and we are not well off financially at all, and the more items we are gifted and don't have to purchase ourselves, the better off we will be)

Yeah I just bought all our cloth. I bought a little each week, and I'm so glad I did. Despite having cloth on the registry, we still got disposables. I did end up using those though, just for the first few weeks. I would say just get them yourself. 😊

I would just put the cloth on your registers and if they buy disposables then just say thank you and take them back and buy what you need. If they don't support you then that just gives you more incentive to succeed and show them you can. I plan on cloth diapering my next. Good luck hun, you can do it.

No one would buy us cloth diapers despite how much I told everyone no disposables. Everyone said "I didn't want to spend money on just one cloth diaper when I could buy you a whole pack of disposables instead"👿 thankfully I could return a lot of things and get what I needed. I second buying gently used. We do that and sanitize and strip per Fluff Love University guidelines (lots of plant based detergent options and instructions for sanitizing without bleach.) If you don't want used, lots of Facebook groups sell new with/without tags on cloth diapers so you can get lower costs without them ever actually getting used. Or ones that have been prepped but never on the baby.

Nobody supported me either. I put a few 6 packs on my registry but nobody bought them. I ended up buying used on ebay and used gift cards to buy supplies like wet bags and a sprayer system.You'll save a ton of money with used. I only purchased one size diapers so they can be used from newborn to potty training. Charlie banana is my favorite.  I did have to buy a case of newborn pampers because my girl was too small at birth but she's in cloth at 3 weeks old and almost 7 lbs. My advice is not to waste money on sized diapers, buy used, and smile big when all those haters see you're still cloth diapering a year from now. Good luck mama!

We just returned the diapers to a big box mart where we could use the credit and then spent the same amount on whatever we needed for CDing.

i added inserts to my registry but only my mom got me some. before my work shower, they asked what kind of diapers I wanted. i told them we were usinf cloth and inserts could be bought for the same price as a pack of disposables. instead no one brought diapers.

We had cloth on our registry and got quite a few disposables. We took about half back and used the money to find what we needed.  My sister in law has been super helpful but everyone else made fun of us for choosing cloth.

She wore disposable at first because I didn't want to buy different size cloth and she'll wear them at daycare in the beginning because we need to get used to our schedule with both of us working again, but I really like the cloth at home! And she doesn't get diaper rash like with the disposables!

We got some of our cloth stash used. If you're comfortable with that, it saved us a LOT of money.

Despite having a cloth diaper registry and a Babies R Us registry for my first, where we put a note that we'd be cloth diapering, my mother-in-law bought us big bulk boxes of disposables in every size. It was like the biggest slap in the face to me. We ended up giving the larger sizes to a friend who needed them.

That said, my first was big but still needed disposables for about 3 weeks because of size, her umbilical cord, and being on a bili-blanket.  My newborn is now 8 days old and smaller and will need disposables for probably a month or so before fitting into the cloth diapers we're planning to use.
