Breastfeeding advice

My second child is due in two weeks.  I did a combo of breastfeeding/pumping/supplementing with my first due to flat nipples, poor latch and low supply.  I used a nipple shield, but even that didn't improve the situation.  I'm hoping for a different experience this time around.  For the moms that had success breastfeeding the first few days, did you feed on demand to try to increase your supply and then then try to "top it off" by pumping?  breastfeeding how long on each side?  Thanks!
