What all does a new born REALLY need!? or NOT need?

Ok first timers at baby registry time!! I'm also creating a nursery and it's a small room, but bigger than a few of our friends that have kids. I'm using regular furniture (dresser for changing table and two night stands next to crib) so the small room already feels tight compared to rooms that have kids/baby furniture. Now that we're starting to register for things I'm thinking where is everything going to fit? I want to be prepared so that I'm organized and less overwhelmed come due date, but what all do babies really need for the first year!? Or maybe it would be easier to suggest things they DONT need. I have a shelf taking up space that just has books and I know newborns aren't going to need books for awhile! So what are some things people registered for or received that just took up space for the first year? Any tips? Thanks!
