How to discipline a 15 month old?

Hi ladies,

Not sure if any of your toddlers are beginning to be naughtier but mine is. He understands the word no and is sometimes continuing a behaviour I tell him no to many times. Two times I have become very frustrated and angerily stuck him in his playpen for a time out for me to cool off. I don't want to act hastily out of frustration, I want to teach him. Any advice? He's my first so still new.

The truth is that babies this young do not really understand no or consequences. "Stop" is actually a better word to use than "no". No is very vague.  No what, mom? No touch? No taste? No more? Stop, however, is a direct command. Then you can add on a short explanation: "Stop, that's dangerous." Or whatever the reason is the child needs to quit the action. Then you distract them.  Turn them in a different direction, give them something safe to play with instead, etc. Your other best tool is to simply not have anything around that they can use to make trouble. Junior keeps grabbing your breakable knick-knacks off the bookshelf? Instead of punishing him for an action he does not understand, place the breakable out of his reach. 15 month olds are not yet able to connect the "no" or their actions with being placed in timeout or swatted. Mine definitely understands no too. If he is getting in to something he shouldn't be I nicely tell him No, Henry quit doing (whatever it is he is doing) if he  doesn't listen then I prevent him from getting into whatever it is. at this point he usually throws a little fit and then goes about his way or If he doesn't get over it I remove him from the situation all together.

Yep our son does the same thing and he knows what no mean he gets worst when you tell him no. We just put him in his crib for time out.

My daughter is 18 months and testing all of the boundaries.  I say no and take her away from whatever and then try to redirect her.  Let's play with this instead.  Let's go in here.  Oh you can't touch that but you can touch this.  At such a young age they are learning and exploring and often think it's funny when you get angry.  I've started reading a book called positive discipline, but my mom has helped me a lot she was a preschool teacher for many years.  It is frusterating but they do learn.

Spank and I say no no no don't touch. To clean up or pick up something I take her to it grab her hand to make her pick it up and give it to me and I say yay thank you. She gets happy and wants to start helping me clean up her toys. She's starting to understand more because I show her how to do things. They won't know unless you show them, they don't understand most of what you say.

Ive been using a distraction method. My son, 19 months, has stopped listening as well. I got a plastic hand clapper from work (long story) and I make it clap and he comes running from whatever he is doing straight to me. Seems to be working been a couple weeks well see in the long run.

I give up. Haha. My wild child understands no, but she doesn't listen. She's looked at me before when I told he to come here (to the dinner table) and then look back at the TV then ignore me, when I told her she needs to listen or else I'll swat her butt she just keeps her eyes on the TV and raises her eyebrows like I dare you. She's recently taken up spitting and hitting. She's so steubborn and test every ounce of patience I have. I tried time outs, swatting her butt, no, taking things of hers, she's so frustrating sometimes.

At this age they test us mommies n daddies.....😑😢 But as parents we have to try our best to teach the LO what's right n wrong. It's so hard when they know it's bad n annoying as hell. Sometimes I just want to scream in frustration.. but the best thing is to distract them with something or time out if they understand that. Idk what else to do honestly but hang in there momma we all go threw it 😘🙂

My daughter is super smart and knows the meaning of no and will do it anyways she was biting and hitting the only thing that got her to stop is giving her a flick on the cheek if she didn't listen after I said no
