How many diaper COVERS do you need for a newborn?

I CANNOT get a proper answer to this question, lol. I plan to wash every other day, use prefolds with covers, and I'm starting from birth. How many COVERS do I need to have in rotation? I have gotten crazy different answers, and I wonder if sometimes people don't understand I am only talking about the outside shell? I've seen people say they only own 6-10 covers with 30 or so prefolds. I've also had people tell me I need to own 20-30 covers and 20-30 prefolds. Help???

For newborn I have 8 covers, 20 newborn prefolds plus 11 fitted cloth diapers...couldn't pass up some good deals on GMD workhorses and kissaluvs! Might still get more newborn prefolds. I just followed the guidelines on stocking up for newborns on Green Mountain Diapers and several other CD websites. Most have said 6-8 covers and 2 to 3 dozen prefolds :)

I survived with 4 NB covers and about 30 prefolds washing every other day. I really only needed 2 or 3 though usually.

I was only planning on having 6 covers max NB - using inserts but mostly FST but I'll have 10 NB covers and will be buying some more FST, I want to have at least 24 FST to start off with. I'll get more I think I only have 12 so far, a handful of inserts, recieving blankets to the max etc. baby not here yet.

I've heard both of those also. I think the ones that don't buy many covers plan on reusing them with new prefolds before washing.
