I'm 17 and I'll be going to college soon. I have extremely painful periods and I was wondering what's the most effective birth control to stop periods and pregnancies

The mirena IUD is very very effective at preventing pregnancy (significantly more than the pill) and also very very effective at helping with period/pms symptoms (if I remember correctly, somewhere around 90% of users report that their periods either get lighter & less painful or go away altogether)

I'm in the same boat as you (just got to college, periods are incredibly painful and heavy) and I'm getting the mirena IUD. First time my gyno tried to insert it, my cervix didn't dilate enough so it couldn't be inserted, but if you run into problems like that your doctor should be more than willing to put you under general anesthesia for the insertion! I was so so scared to get it inserted, but it's so worth the trouble to know you won't get pregnant for all of college and then some.

For pregnancy, the Nexplanon was 1 out of 1000 women for pregnant. IUD's are 3-5 out of 1,000.

For periods definitely the pill. I believe some IUD's cause light bleeding but idk.
