mothers of kids with common names: does it matter that other kids share their name?

A name I've always loved has become common the last few years and in this era of striving for "unique" names it's hard not to be put off. Would love to hear from mothers whose kids share a name with their peers about whether it actually makes zip difference.

Really just depends how many people you personally know with that name. My step sons name is Aiden. Pretty much the most popular boys name out there. It suits him and is a good name but it's confusing for My kids because they have four friends named Aiden so when we talk we have to say "your brother Aiden" or "big Aiden" or "little Aiden" or "aiden, haileys sister" and that's a little frustrating.

I don't mind it to be popular but not TOO popular. Meeting a couple in your life is fine but, my name is Brittany and everyone's name was also Brittany, it was annoying.

My daughters name is Mackenzie depending on your area this could be considered a common name but it's fitting for her plus it starts with a M like mine....we've crossed paths with a few Mackenzie's and normally me and other moms laugh when our kids respond to the name my daughter is only 4 so I'm not sure how much she likes her name because she hates saying it out loud idk why though

I liked that I was the only one in my school with my name. I never met anyone in person that had my name. That's probably why I try to go for unique names, my sons name is Jamieson which I doubt anyone will have here in Australia.

I hate that my daughters name is so popular. She knows 4 girls with the same name at her school. I know 8 girls with her name around her age or younger. I didn't realize it was so popular when I chose it. If I had known I would've picked something else.

I named my son a less common name because of this. I love his name and have never met another one.

My future children will have less common names as well.

I don't have kids but in the UK m6 name is very unique (not sure about other countries) and I love my name and I'm glad I haven't met other girls with the same one 😊 I personally think unique is better rather than something that's quite common but that's just me

It depends. The child may or may not mind. I personally hated growing up with so many other Jennifer's my age. It was the second most popular name the year I was born. Although if the name you have always wanted is very popular now, I don't see why you should have to change that. You have always wanted that name and can't do anything about it becoming popular. Maybe think of a good nickname to go along with it so that there can be a little bit of difference and still make your child unique without having it be too unique if that's not what you want.

I think it depends where you live as well.  I grew up somewhere really small and I rarely met anyone with my name but it isnt particularly unique.  In the UK Britney/Brittany isnt that common as I have never taught one in 10 years and never met one. 
But to be honest I don't think it is that big of a deal if there are other people with the same name. There are plenty of other things that make someone unique. I would much rather have someone with my name than be called Rainy Day or Grey Wall just to be different.

I think a boring name would be more unique now. Lol I wanted to name my soon to be born son, James, but husband thought it was too boring. :( I think people think too much about names. Who cares what name you decide on or if they have the same name as someone else. It's your child, call him or her whatever makes you happy as long as it's not dumb like "kokaine". :P

My name was popular at my school. As a kid I thought it was really cool that other people had the same name as me. My mom did not care.
