What's your opinion of it? What are the benefits?

My nephew used it and it was pretty cool. Helps reduce frustration from not being able to communicate wants/needs.

My 2nd used it a little bit before she could talk. Made it easier for her to communicate her wants/needs to me.

I thought it sounded cool, but now that my baby is old enough I'm too lazy to bother. It has no long term affects but is nice for a little while.

I think it's a good idea for some. A lot of my cousins decided to use sign language with their kids, and almost all of their kids don't talk well/don't want to talk because they're just used to sign language.

The daycare I worked at we taught the kids sign language just small stuff like done hungry milk juice etc the parents said it helped a lot and helped them with the crying times

I work at a school and the speech pathologist recommended starting with all done and more. She said to use the word with the sign, then have the baby do the sign with their hands (you obviously have to do it for them), then follow it with the action. For example, you say and sign more, have baby sign it, then give baby more food; or you say and sign all done, have baby sign it, then pick baby up and move them to a new activity. You can start around 8 months, and baby should be able to use it around 10-11 months.

My daughter uses it. She's significantly delayed because of her medical problems. By definition she's legally blind but somehow manages to see me teaching her signs. She's almost 3 and not really talking. For us it's been super helpful especially since she gets frustrated when I can't understand what she needs. A lot of the signs she does aren't exactly what they are supposed to be, she put her own twist on it. But I've learned what she's saying and without it I don't know where we'd be as far as her communicating her needs

Yes absolutely. It's awesome. Taught my son sign language as a baby and just stared w my 6 mo old. The Benefits are the baby can communicate with you! Also it increases language development and has a positive correlation w higher intelligence if you read the research on it. I highly recommend it and it's easy. Just start w a couple simple signs (I do: more, milk, all done, water, up). And be very consistent. My 6 mo old already recognizes the sign for milk.
