hiring a doula for a hospital birth?

I've been considering hiring one so I was just wondering if anyone on here has and if you can tell me about your experience? Did she help you have a natural birth? What does she do while you're laboring and giving birth? Would you hire one again? TIA!

We had a doula & she was amazing. Prior to labor, she always called to check in & would answer any questions I had. I ended up being induced due to HBP but went pain med free with her help until I was a 7. She was just as much support for me as she was my husband. He could leave the room to give updates to our family & I still had her by my side. Unfortunately baby girl got stuck & we had to do an emergency c-section after I was in labor for 16 hours. But she was wonderful & we would do it all again.

I'm just going to assume that my midwife do everything that a doula would do. My midwife also brings an assistant with her to help and I don't feel like three people would be necessary. If you are having a hospital birth with an obgyn, it would probably be good to hire one because they aren't nearly as supportive most of the time as a midwife would be..

I had a doula and she was amazing. My husband and I prior to labor took a 6 week class with her (1 meeting a week) where we discussed our birthing plans what to expect and explored all aspects of welcoming a human into the world. She also was available for any questions that would come up. During labor she was such amazing emotional support and really helped my husband and I get through the whole 30 hours. I was also able to do it without any pain medications and know I could not have done it without her. If you are thinking about getting a doula I would interview a few of them first to find the one that is the best fit for what you are wanting, not all of them have the same ideas or beliefs.
