It really does not matter.

They say that the pain is lesser if you have one inserted after you have vaginally given birth, but honestly I felt pretty much no pain at 20 with no kids and a retroverted uterus.

You can be given a pill to dilate your cervix to make insertion easier, there are now different sized IUDs for women with a smaller or larger uterus etc.

My gynecologist said the Mirena is recommended for women who have given birth, but it is the best birth control option for me due to health issues. I had it inserted at 19 with no kids, I'm now 20. I developed a blood clot in my lung from birth control pills and a blood clotting disorder so I take blood thinner everyday and will continue to do so for the rest of my life. Blood thinner made my period much longer and a lot heavier. I was bleeding 21 days out of the month. Being prone to blood clots, I cannot take anything with estrogen. The Mirena is progesterone only, and can lighten your period or even make them disappear, which is exactly what it did for me. I haven't had a period in months and I love it. Mirena is one of the best choices I've made when it comes to birth control. I apologize if I gave too much detail but I wanted to be thorough. :)
