Dom/Sub VS Vanilla Relationships?

So, what's the difference between a Dom/Sub relationship vs a vanilla relationship? Is it a lifestyle thing or does it purely concern sex life? It's always confused me

Dom/sub relationships usually require some rough play and like it says, domination and submission. "Vanilla" is like missionary in your bed at 9 pm every night. Dom/subs are more spontaneous too from what I've heard.

For us it's just sex. I can see the appeal of day to day life like that, and maybe we'll try to out at some point, but by the time we have kids 5 or so years from now we'll phase it out of our day to day. I refuse to let my children see me and my fiancé as anything but equals.

It can be either my boyfriend and I have it mainly for just our sex life but are easing it into everyday life to see how it works and if it doesn't it'll go back to just during sex
