delayed cord clamping/cutting??

Question

My husband and I recently finished our baby class and there was some information about delayed cord clamping as an option. I researched (as I do with everything) and found some great articles but was curious is anyone else has heard of it/is doing it/has done it before? What are your thoughts?

It's actually standard at my hospital to wait until the cord stops pulsing. I was doing research on it and wanted it, but then found out at or childbirth classes that it's standard practice there now.

I've done delayed clamping with two of my kids. The first time I asked, it wasn't very popular yet and the doctor did do it but was hesitant. The second time, almost all the doctors do it and encourage it and seemed to be the norm at the hospital I delivered. The two babies I did cord clamping with were not jaundiced, while my first baby where the cord was immediately clamped, was quite jaundiced. Literature is definitely showing there are proven benefits, so more and more doctors are following those guidelines.

I wanted to do it- but when I was in labor a nurse told me she doesn't think it's a good idea because she thinks it raises chances of jaundice and some other things so we didn't do it-- my son ended up
With really bad jaundice tho anyways... I haven't done further research probably will look into it more the next pregnancy

Nothing new to midwives but they are just now understanding the importance of it in hospitals. It highly important honestly to request that they wait til the cord has stopped pulsating to cut it.  Honestly if no emergency is at hand you can breastfeed right away or within the first hour which helps the placenta come naturally and then cut the cord. Babies lose a lot of blood supply and those important stem cells when their cord is cut right away. Those stem cells are a tremendous help with their little immune system and stopping any hemorrhaging most babies go through after coming through such a tight passage. Dr Suzanne Humphrey is a great one to hear out when it comes to infant immunity. She talks heavily on the importance of delayed cord clamping. To me it's sad that's so unknown in this country when it's so important to these babies.
