can you spoil a newborn?

My baby is 2 weeks old and I pick him up when he cries. My mother in law told me tonight that I'm spoiling him. Thoughts?

Noooo. Newborns cry because they need things. They don't understand that they're crying and they're not crying to be whiny. You're not spoiling the baby.

Nope. They just came out of you, in a big huge world. Learning all the time. It's normal for them to want comfort from mom because they have known you longer then anyone else. Enjoy it while it last. My baby is 3 months and I miss him being tiny.

No, I do not believe you can spoil a bewborn. Love on that baby as much as you want! :-)

I think you'll be able to tell when or if they start getting spoiled. And it won't happen for a long time.  I would rather spoil my baby a little than miss out on the lovin. :-) There is nothing better than baby snuggles.

No; an infant doesn't have the ability to cognitively understand that their cry does anything other than communicate something is not feeling right with their body. Holding an infant at 2 weeks is not spoiling... you have plenty of time to teach them how to entertain themselves in alone play time once they can actually cognitively play without help

Nope not at all!  Don't listen to your mother in law on this.  Pick up the baby always, they need to know we are there.  It's how they feel safe.
