birth control pills

So I just started my new pack of pills about 3 or 4 days ago and it says that I have to wait a week before I am protected again. I don't take my sugar pills and I missed the very last pill before the sugar pills. I had sex last night with my boyfriend and he came inside me. I just want to know if that whole waiting a week thing is true or not?
