Me and my bf have been in a rocky relationship, im not as confident as i used to be that marriage is in our future together. I was considering not giving our child his last name, bc of that. Should i give our child his last name?

I believe family names to be very important. If you have a son especially you should give him his fathers name. Your relationship status doesn't determine family ties.

My grandma (rip) had 12 children. All of them had the same father except for the last one (my aunt). My grandma decided to give my aunt the same last name (smith)  as the rest of her kids. 
My aunt who is technically not a "smith" gave her son the last name of "smith" also. 
He is NOT a "smith". Genetically he has no "smith" blood running thru his body and neither does my aunt. Now my cousin (aunt son)wants to know why he does not have his fathers last name and my aunt can't explain why. Its goes deeper than this but i said all that to say names are important imo. Especially in a black family. We (black people) have already lost our identity when we were giving new names (slavery). Give that baby his fathers last name.

If you're not married then there's not much argument for him to make about it having his name. Not that it's necessary of it to even have it should you be legally married. It's never mandatory.

All of my kids have their dads last name, even before we married. IMO a child should always carry their fathers name. My mother didn't give me my dads name, she gave me her husbands (boyfriend at the time) name - knowing I wasn't his. & now they're divorced. I hold a great deal of resentment for that as well. No matter what that is his child too. Give him/her both of your names.

I would yes. Despite you two not being married in the future, the child will still always be his. I'd say no if you have any indication of him not wanting to be in the child's life, but if it's a matter of the relationship not working out, then I would say no. My mom and I don't have the same last name and it doesn't bother me. She remarried after divorcing my father.

My logic is: If him and i are not married or plan on getting married then why pass on the legacy of having our child have his last name. 
for example: if he later in life chose to marry someone else, she (his wife) will carry his last name.
If they have kids they too will carry his last name.
-Right along with my child???
i don't know how i feel about that.

And vise versa,
if i marry someone else, i will  carry the mans last name, and my child would just carry my ex aka baby fathers last name??
seems better if the child has my maiden last name. 
and  if i chose to have another child with my husband he/she would carry OUR last name, and i say "OUR" because of marriage.

&& i ask because if it was up to me be and my current bf be at least engaged by now. Pretty much just waiting for him to get his mind right. But not rushing/ smothering him about marriage either...

If you are doubting it, I honestly wouldn't give the baby his last name. If you guys work out and get married, great! If not, that baby will have your last name and you won't have to worry about it.
