losing parts of mucous plug

I'm 12 weeks today and when I went to wipe I noticed what appeared to be a small part of my mucous plug. I know what it looks like from my last pregnancy (it definitely wasn't just discharge). I'm wondering why it's happening so early on. Has anyone else experienced this?
