doing baby shower at a restaurant?

The picnic venues plus food are too expensive for my budget in my area so I was thinking about doing a restaurant and having everyone pay for their own meals from a selected list. Is that bad??

I think yes. You are basically asking them to come to dinner and pay for their own food plus bring you gifts. 
If you are throwing your own shower why don't you use the money you would use to throw the shower and just buy the stuff you need. Then you can have a get together after the baby is born to have a meet and greet.

That doesn't seem right to have people pay for their meal. Maybe just do a small get together with finger food. My first was a BBQ and guys we're watching football in the living room and we had the shower in family room.

A friend of mine is letting me use her house (I live in a little apartment) and we are just doing a BBQ. I'm paying for the meat and a couple basic sides and drinks. Some other friends are bringing desserts and other drinks if they want, but we aren't expecting it. If you are inviting people to something, it is kind of tacky to expect them to pay for it and bring gifts.

I agree with them, you can't ask people to pay for their meals. Explore some more affordable options that are possible for you and maybe if a family member or close friend are willing to help

Why not just have a gathering at a park? You could just get sandwiches or something simple for the food.
Asking guests to pay for their own dinner is much. They are already coming with gifts for you.

Having the party from 2-4 is usually a money saving time. You just need a few snacks & cake :) I agree with the others that asking people to purchase their own meals at a restaurant is not the best choice for a shower. Most local libraries have large community rooms you can use for free on Saturdays & weekdays. Another choice would be a local Y or some type of community center if your home is not big enough. Or just having a get together at your house or a friend's. Just supply drinks and finger food. My sister is doing mine. We are doing a BBQ kick back, nothing fancy.

Just a thought, your local library has rooms you can reserve for free and you could just do something small like a fruit tray or veggies and ranch for your guests.

My cousin is letting us host at her place. I'm cooking simple food for the group and people can  bring whatever they want.... I'm on a budget as well.
