Would you assume the name Luke short for Lucas?

Husband and I love the name Luke but are worried he will constantly be correcting people that assume his name is short for Lucas. Is Luke more of a nickname? Like how Mike is short for Michael.

Not necessarily...  Lucas, Lucian, are both long names for Luke.  Luke is also a name on its own
